Manchester International Festival

Manchester International Festival is the world’s first festival of original, new work and special events, and takes place biennially in Manchester, UK. The Festival launched in 2007 as an artist-led, commissioning festival presenting new works from across the spectrum of performing arts, visual arts and popular culture.

MHM was commissioned to undertake an evaluation of the first Manchester International Festival.

In order to complete a detailed evaluation of such a large project such as the MIF, we first worked with the Festival to devise a detailed evaluation strategy, before utilising a mixed methodology that involved speaking to Festival attenders, volunteers, a mix of stakeholders and the Greater Manchester population.

We conducted a detailed e-survey of nearly 1,300 bookers to the Festival which helped gather demographic profile data, as well as attitude to risk, satisfaction with the Festival events and activities, as well as the economic impact of the Festival on Manchester. We also carried out a population survey with a representative sample of over 1,500 Greater Manchester residents to gauge awareness and usage of the Festival, which  provided unprecedented data about usage and potential markets for the arts in Greater Manchester.

Using this benchmark we have evaluated the festival in each of its subsequent incarnations in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
